A square metre (m²) is the area of a square whose each side is one metre in length. It is the standard derived unit of area in the International System of Units (SI).
This unit is widely used globally for measuring rooms, apartments, land plots, building footprints, as the metric system is the preferred standard for many countries and industries.
Square Feet=Square metres× 10.7639
This conversion is derived from the fact that one metre = 3.28084 feet, and squaring the relationship gives the area conversion factor.
A square foot (ft²) is a unit of area defined by a square whose sides each measure one foot (12 inches).
It is extensively used in the U.S., Canada, India (for many real-estate listings), the UK (to some extent) for describing floor area, room size, property area, interior spaces, etc.
Because the measurement of one foot is 0.3048 metres, one square foot corresponds to approximately 0.092903 m².
The metre was introduced during the late 18th century as part of the French Revolution’s push to standardise measurement and create a decimal-based universal system. From this, the square metre emerged as the derived unit of area.
With adoption of the metric system across many countries, the square metre became a global standard for area measurement in science, engineering, architecture, real-estate and land planning.
The foot as a length unit has very old origins — many cultures used a ‘foot’ based on the human foot or a standard rod. Over time, in British and U.S. customary systems, the foot became standardized (the “international foot” is exactly 0.3048 metres).
Once the foot was established, defining a square foot (a square with side of one foot) followed naturally. The square foot became widely used in construction, real-estate, interior measurement and property listings especially in the U.S., Canada, UK, India and other regions.
Therefore the square foot has a strong legacy in measurement practices where imperial/U.S. customary units have prevailed.
Metric system unit of area; defined by a square of side 1 metre.
Imperial/U.S. customary unit of area; defined by a square of side 1 foot (12 inches).
Commonly used in countries with metric system; ideal for global, scientific, engineering measurement and standardised property metrics.
Common in regions using imperial/U.S. system; often used in property listings, interior floor area measurement, older reference documents.
1 m² = ~10.7639 ft² (multiply by ~10.7639 to convert to ft²).
1 ft² = ~0.092903 m² (divide by ~10.7639 or multiply by ~0.092903 to convert to m²).
Because 1 m = 3.28084 ft, when squared this gives the conversion factor 10.7639.
Tied to the length of a foot measurement; legacy unit.
