Once the foot was established, defining a square foot (a square with side of one foot) followed naturally. The square foot became widely used in construction, real-estate, interior measurement and property listings especially in the U.S., Canada, UK, India and other regions.
Therefore the square foot has a strong legacy in measurement practices where imperial/U.S. customary units have prevailed.
